Ghana launches inaugural Gaming Awareness Month to promote responsible gaming

On August 27th, the Ghana Gaming Commission officially launched Gaming Awareness Month, set to take place every September, with a focus on promoting responsible gaming practices across the country. The event, which was broadcast on the Commission's official Facebook page, highlighted the importance of protecting players and the public through the continuous improvement of gaming systems.

The Commissioner of Gaming, Peter Mireku, emphasized the industry's significant responsibility to ensure safe and sustainable gaming practices. He pointed out the potential of technology in implementing customized player protection measures, which are crucial for fostering a secure gaming environment.

The Gaming Awareness Month, under the theme “Embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) for a Sustainable Gaming Industry,” will feature a variety of activities. These include media engagements, public awareness campaigns, community outreach programs, workshops on gaming addiction, educational sessions on gaming addiction and mental health for students, a series of webinars discussing the impact of gaming, a health walk, and a sports competition.

As the regulator of games of chance in Ghana, the Commission is marking 18 years of its establishment with this inaugural Responsible Gaming Month. This campaign aims to raise awareness of responsible gaming practices and promote safer gaming environments. Mr. Mireku stressed the need for the gaming industry to prioritize environmental and social issues to achieve sustainable development.

The Commission's initiative reflects its commitment to overseeing the rapid growth of the gaming industry in Ghana, which has expanded significantly with the advent of technology. The Gaming Awareness Month will serve as an annual event dedicated to educating players and stakeholders on responsible gaming, ensuring that the industry's growth benefits everyone involved.

This launch represents a significant milestone in the Commission's ongoing efforts to create a sustainable and thriving gaming ecosystem in Ghana, with a strong focus on the well-being of users and responsible gaming practices.
