Ghana blocks access to 11 unauthorized gaming websites

The Gaming Commission of Ghana has taken decisive steps to curb illegal gaming activities, with Acting Games Commissioner Emmanuel Siisi Quainoo spearheading efforts to sanitize the industry. In a recent engagement with industry stakeholders, he announced that the National Communications Authority (NCA) has been instructed to restrict access to the websites of 11 unauthorized gaming operators.

Mr. Quainoo, who recently assumed office, met with representatives from the Ghana Association of Sports Betting Operators (GHASBO) and the Ghana Association of Casino & Route Operators in Accra. He assured operators of his commitment to fostering a conducive business environment while addressing key industry concerns.

Addressing the issue of illegal gaming, Mr. Quainoo emphasized that unlicensed operations threaten the sustainability of the legitimate sector. He revealed that new measures would soon be introduced to tackle illegal gaming activities nationwide. Additionally, payment service providers have been advised to conduct due diligence with the Gaming Commission before onboarding gaming-related businesses.

To curb misconduct within the regulatory body, the Acting Commissioner issued an immediate directive barring unauthorized Gaming Commission staff from directly or indirectly engaging with operators. This move aims to prevent harassment and unauthorized solicitations that undermine the industry’s integrity.

The Acting Commissioner also reassured stakeholders about ongoing discussions on taxation. He noted that the current administration, led by President John Dramani Mahama, remains committed to abolishing the controversial betting tax on player winnings. Further engagements with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) are planned to address concerns related to gross gaming revenue taxation, operational charges, and the potential introduction of a new gaming administration monitoring system.

Mr. Quainoo reiterated the Commission’s dedication to creating a fair and sustainable gaming landscape in Ghana. He called for increased collaboration between regulators and industry operators to build a thriving gaming sector that benefits all stakeholders.
