Gambling Authority CEO unveils strategic initiatives for Botswana’s casino industry
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Gambling Authority, Emolemo Peter Kesitilwe, recently outlined strategic initiatives aimed at fostering growth and job creation in Botswana's casino industry during a meet and greet session with key stakeholders.
Kesitilwe outlined several key areas of focus. The Chief Executive Officer emphasized a commitment to a transparent and efficient licensing process to ensure that only reputable operators receive licenses.
He announced the introduction of new licensing categories, covering both physical and online operations, with betting and limited payout machine licenses expected to be available by August 2024.
The Responsible Gambling Contribution will be reduced from 5% to 3.5%.
A 24-hour toll-free helpline and self-help portal for problem gamblers will be launched.
A newly approved Code of Practice for the industry will be socialized.
Robust AML/CTF/CPF measures and training programs for operators will be implemented.
Ongoing mock mutual evaluations will assess Botswana’s preparedness for the 2027 Mutual Evaluation.
The Gaming and Gambling Policy of 2002 will undergo a review to align with current industry trends and challenges.
Kesitilwe highlighted the Authority's dedication to maintaining a safe, fair, and thriving gambling environment in Botswana.
In response, operators praised the Authority's democratic approach, acknowledging progress on the self-help portal.They also urged for a ditional cuts in the Responsible Gambling Contribution and the elimination of the yearly license fee. Additionally, they stressed the need for the Authority to keep pace with technological advancements to effectively regulate the industry.
