Gabon’s gambling revenue set to reach 185 million francs in 2024
Gambling is projected to generate 185 million francs for the Gabonese government in 2024, according to a report by Direct Infos Gabon. This growing sector has become a significant source of revenue for the state, with the Transitional Government anticipating an increase to 221.5 million francs in tax revenues from gambling activities by 2025, marking a 20% increase from the previous year.
These projections are outlined in the draft Finance Law for 2025. Since February 2021, the gambling landscape in Gabon has been governed by a new regulatory framework established by Ordinance N°0012/PR/2020, which focuses on entertainment, gambling, and betting regulations. Key innovations include increased competition in the sector, recognition of online gambling, player protection measures, and efforts to combat addiction while regulating the number of operators.
According to the law, gambling operations are divided into three categories. The first category includes casinos, lotteries, and slot machine operations. The second category covers betting on horse races at venues such as racetracks or kiosks, as well as sports betting. The third category consists of online betting companies.
This regulatory approach aims to enhance the gambling environment in Gabon while ensuring responsible gaming practices.
