Former cricketer Suresh Raina questioned in case of promoting illegal online betting platforms
On August 13, at around 11:00 am, former cricketer Suresh Raina was seen interacting with officials of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at a federal agency office in central Delhi.
Suresh Raina was questioned in a case in which 28 other celebrities have been named for promoting illegal online betting platforms. They are being questioned under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The probe is to find out whether the celebrities knew that they were promoting illegal apps and how they were paid for the ads. Some of them claim that they were ignorant of the legal status of the platforms they were promoting and were therefore unaware of the advertisers’ involvement in illegal activities.
The case was filed by the Telangana police following a complaint filed by 32-year-old businessman P M Phanindra Sarma on March 19. The complaint was filed in view of the alarming rise in the promotion of illegal online betting platforms due to which many people have suffered financially.
