Finance Ministry leads efforts to regulate gambling in DR Congo
The Congolese government, through Finance Minister Doudou Fwamba Likunde Li-Botayi, has pledged to establish a stringent legal framework to regulate the gambling sector and its associated practices. This initiative aims to capture lost state revenues and protect citizens from the dangers of the growing industry.
From January 9 to 11, 2025, a technical validation workshop for the draft law on general principles governing gambling was held in Kinshasa. The proposed law seeks to promote responsible gambling, combat addiction, and strengthen measures against fraud and money laundering while fostering economic growth.
Experts at the workshop focused on fiscal, legal, and institutional aspects, highlighting the need to address capital laundering challenges. The reforms emphasize revising legal frameworks, cleaning up the sector, and enhancing regulatory capacity.
The workshop concluded with recommendations to improve regulation, combat financial crimes, and enhance revenue collection.
