Everton Owners Explore Sale of Controlling Stake Less Than Two Years After Takeover

The Friedkin Group is exploring new investment options for Everton, including the potential sale of a controlling interest, less than two years after completing its takeover of the Premier League club.

Everton could be heading for another major ownership change after The Friedkin Group (TFG) confirmed that it is considering new investment options, including the potential sale of its controlling interest in the club.

TFG completed its takeover of Everton from Farhad Moshiri in December 2024, bringing an end to a prolonged period of financial uncertainty. The ownership group said its initial priorities had been stabilising the club, providing investment and supporting the completion of the new Hill Dickinson Stadium.

With those foundations now in place, TFG believes the time has come to examine what it described as Everton’s “next chapter”. The group stressed that it would only consider buyers or investors it believes are capable of acting as appropriate long-term custodians of the club.

Investment bank Moelis & Company has been retained by TFG to oversee the process. No buyer has been announced and the club has not confirmed a valuation or timetable, meaning the review could result in anything from fresh outside investment to a full change of controlling ownership.

Media estimates suggest TFG could seek between £800 million and £1 billion for Everton, although that figure has not been confirmed by the club. The group acquired Everton when the club was under significant financial pressure and has since overseen its move into the new stadium.

Manager David Moyes admitted he was surprised by the announcement, saying he learned about the ownership review when the club’s statement was released. The news follows a difficult summer transfer window that had already raised questions among supporters over the owners’ long-term ambitions.

TFG has said that its support for Everton will continue while the strategic review is under way, both on the sporting side and through the club’s community activities. The group does not intend to provide further public updates during the process.

For Everton, the review creates another potentially significant transition just as the club begins life in its new stadium and seeks to strengthen its position in the Premier League. The key question will now be whether TFG ultimately brings in additional investors or decides to hand controlling ownership to a new buyer.
