Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola breaks Olympic record to win men's Marathon gold
Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola secured the gold medal in the men’s marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday, setting a new Olympic record with a remarkable time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 26 seconds.
Tola's victory marks a triumphant return for Ethiopia, ending their 24-year drought in the Olympic marathon
The 27-year-old athlete showcased his endurance and speed throughout the grueling 42.195-kilometer race, leaving his competitors in awe.
Tola's achievement was made even more remarkable by the challenging weather conditions, with temperatures reaching 30°C during the race. Despite the heat, Tola maintained a steady pace, gradually pulling away from the pack to secure a comfortable lead.
The silver medal went to Bashir Abdi of Belgium, while Kenya's Benson Kipruto claimed the bronze. Both athletes put forth impressive performances, but ultimately fell short of Tola's record-breaking run.
