Esports roundup: T1 stunned by reverse sweep, Fnatic miss Worlds and CS2 gets a new kill record

The opening days of September delivered major developments across League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2 and VALORANT, from a dramatic LCK comeback and the end of Fnatic’s decade-long Worlds streak to a historic individual CS2 performance and the decisive stage of BLAST Open Porto.

One of the biggest results came in South Korea on September 2, where Hanwha Life Esports recovered from 0-2 down to defeat T1 3-2 in the LCK playoffs. T1 controlled the opening two games, but Hanwha Life won three consecutive maps to complete the reverse sweep and advance through the upper bracket. The result sets up a major meeting with Gen.G, while T1 must continue its playoff campaign through the lower side of the bracket. T1’s interim head coach Lim Jae-hyun later acknowledged that draft mistakes contributed to the collapse.

Gen.G had already strengthened its position a day earlier by sweeping KT Rolster 3-0. The victory guaranteed Gen.G a place at the 2026 League of Legends World Championship for a seventh consecutive year. It also secured T1’s Worlds qualification through the LCK playoff structure, meaning several of South Korea’s biggest organisations already know they will be competing on the international stage later this year.

Europe produced a very different League of Legends story. Fnatic will miss Worlds for the first time in a decade after losing 2-1 to GIANTX on August 30. The defeat eliminated one of Europe’s most historic esports organisations before the LEC Summer playoffs and also ended Fnatic’s record of reaching the postseason in every LEC season since the league was established in 2013.

In VALORANT, Karmine Corp defeated Team Liquid 3-1 to win VCT EMEA Stage 2 on August 30. KC took Sunset 13-7 and Ascent 13-6, Liquid responded on Lotus, but Karmine Corp closed the series on Summit 13-10. The victory completed a dramatic turnaround after a difficult first half of the season and gives the French organisation EMEA’s top seed heading into VALORANT Champions Shanghai.

Counter-Strike 2 also produced a new individual benchmark. Kazakhstan’s Daulet “dako” Ondassynov recorded 40 kills in 24 regulation rounds for Game Point against Total Domination at BRO Cyber League Season 1 in Almaty. The performance surpassed Alex “poiii” Sundgren’s previous overall regulation record of 39 and Danil “donk” Kryshkovets’s previous LAN mark of 38.

Attention in top-level CS2 now turns to BLAST Open Porto, where six teams remain in contention. Spirit and MOUZ advanced directly to the semi-finals, while Falcons will face G2 and FURIA will meet Vitality in the quarter-finals on September 4. Spirit will play the Falcons-G2 winner, while MOUZ await either FURIA or Vitality. The $1.1 million tournament concludes with a best-of-five grand final on September 6.

The transfer market is moving as well. Ninjas in Pyjamas signed Karim “Krimbo” Moussa on loan from BIG on September 2, with the German rifler also taking over in-game leadership duties. Krimbo fills the roster position opened after veteran IGL Marco “Snappi” Pfeiffer was moved to the bench, giving NIP another significant change as the organisation searches for greater consistency.

The latest stretch of the esports calendar therefore combines both immediate competition and longer-term change. League of Legends is moving rapidly toward Worlds, VALORANT’s regional picture is taking shape ahead of Champions Shanghai, while CS2 has both a major tournament entering its decisive phase and a new statistical record. With BLAST Porto playoffs and key LCK matches still ahead, the first week of September is already producing several of the strongest esports storylines since the end of the Esports World Cup.
