CS2 EWC 2026 playoffs set as Vitality, Spirit and Falcons land on same side of bracket
The Counter-Strike 2 tournament at the Esports World Cup has reached its knockout stage, with 16 teams remaining from the original 32. An unusually stacked half of the bracket puts Team Vitality, Team Spirit and Team Falcons on a collision course, while defending champions The MongolZ face Falcons in the opening round.
The group stage of the Counter-Strike 2 competition at the Esports World Cup 2026 concluded on August 16, confirming the 16 teams that will compete in the single-elimination playoffs from August 19 to 23 in Paris. The tournament carries a $2 million prize pool, with $600,000 going to the champion.
The most significant result of the playoff draw is that three of the leading title contenders — Team Vitality, Team Falcons and Team Spirit — have all been placed on the same side of the bracket. Only one of the three can therefore reach the Grand Final.
Falcons will begin against defending EWC champions The MongolZ, while FaZe Clan face Vitality and B8 meet Spirit. If the leading favourites progress, the structure creates the possibility of several heavyweight clashes before the final rather than at the end of the tournament.
Vitality reached the playoffs through the lower side of Group C after suffering a 1-2 defeat against B8 in the upper bracket. The European roster recovered in its decisive match on August 16, defeating Lynn Vision 2-0 to secure qualification. Spirit also took a more difficult route after a surprise opening loss to JiJieHao, eventually recovering through the lower bracket to claim a playoff place.
Falcons had a more direct path, defeating Astralis to qualify through the upper bracket. Their Round of 16 meeting with The MongolZ is particularly notable because the Mongolian organisation won the 2025 edition of the EWC Counter-Strike tournament.
The other half of the bracket begins with G2 Esports against Astralis, FUT Esports against magic, FURIA against Aurora Gaming and GamerLegion against MOUZ. Natus Vincere will also face Legacy. The draw is potentially favourable to FURIA and several teams on that side because Vitality, Spirit and Falcons cannot all advance deep into the competition.
The Round of 16 begins on August 19 with G2-Astralis, FUT-magic, FURIA-Aurora and GamerLegion-MOUZ. NAVI-Legacy, Falcons-The MongolZ, FaZe-Vitality and B8-Spirit follow on August 20. Quarterfinals are scheduled for August 21, semifinals for August 22 and the third-place match and Grand Final for August 23.
After a group stage marked by several unexpected results, the playoff draw has increased the pressure on some of the biggest names in Counter-Strike. Vitality, Spirit and Falcons now face the possibility of eliminating one another before the Grand Final, while teams on the opposite side have gained a clearer route toward the title. The opening knockout matches on August 19 and 20 should therefore establish whether the favourites can restore the expected competitive order or whether the EWC will produce another major upset.
