Combined Gambling and Liquor Board will be created in the South African province of Northern Cape

Combined Gambling and Liquor Board will be created in the South African province of Northern Cape

A unified Gambling and Liquor Board is set to be established in the Northern Cape province as outlined in the recently published Northern Cape Gambling and Liquor Act.

This legislation paves the way for the formation of a joint Gambling and Liquor Council, consolidating regulatory oversight for both sectors. The new Act aligns closely with the previous Gambling Act 2008 and Liquor Act 2009 in terms of regulatory requirements.

The Act delineates key definitions, objectives, and provisions governing the establishment, composition, authority, and functions of the Northern Cape Gambling and Liquor Board. Notably, the current Northern Cape Gambling Regulations and Northern Cape Liquor Regulations will remain effective until revised.

It is worth noting that a public consultation on proposed amendments to the Northern Cape gambling laws was initiated in May 2023, leading to the development of this comprehensive legislative framework.
