Colombia Gambling Contributions to Subsidized Healthcare Jump 39% to COP977 Billion

Colombia’s gambling regulator Coljuegos collected COP977.22 billion for the country’s subsidized healthcare system between January and August 2026, up 39.38% year-on-year, with sports betting providing the strongest boost.

Colombia’s regulated gambling sector has significantly increased its contribution to the country’s subsidized healthcare system, with Coljuegos reporting COP977.22 billion in collections during the first eight months of 2026.

The figure represents a 39.38% increase compared with the same period of 2025, when collections stood at COP701.12 billion. In absolute terms, the sector generated an additional COP276.10 billion for healthcare-related transfers compared with the previous year.

Sports betting was the main driver of the increase. According to Coljuegos, collections from the segment grew by 84.24%, supported by heightened betting activity around the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Between January and August, sports betting through online operators generated COP473.02 billion in collections.

The performance highlights the growing importance of online betting within Colombia’s regulated gambling market. Sports betting alone accounted for almost half of the total amount collected for subsidized healthcare during the period.

Land-based gambling also recorded solid growth. Collections from localized games, including casinos and bingo operations, increased by 12.25%, from COP250.22 billion in the first eight months of 2025 to COP280.87 billion during the corresponding period of 2026.

Other state-controlled gambling products also delivered higher monopoly revenues. Coljuegos reported increases of 4.88% for SuperAstro, 13.17% for Baloto, 36.37% for Baloto Revancha and 28.98% for Miloto. The regulator also pointed to the launch of Keno as an additional development within the regulated market.

The latest results come as Coljuegos continues combining market development with enforcement against unlicensed gambling. In August, the regulator reported that its broader anti-illegal-gambling strategy had resulted in the seizure of 12,852 unauthorized gaming devices and 58,916 orders to block websites operating or promoting illegal betting.

For Colombia, the sharp increase in healthcare contributions underlines the fiscal significance of the regulated gambling industry. The exceptional growth in sports betting was boosted by a major event in the 2026 World Cup, meaning the same pace may not automatically continue once that effect fades. However, continued expansion of regulated online betting, growth in land-based gaming and tighter action against illegal operators could help maintain higher levels of contributions to the country’s subsidized healthcare system.
