China misses The International 2026 playoffs as home teams fall in Shanghai
The International 2026 will enter its main event without a single Chinese team after Xtreme Gaming, Vici Gaming and Team Resilience were eliminated during the group and elimination stages, leaving the Shanghai crowd without a home representative in the final eight.
China’s hopes of competing for the Aegis of Champions on home soil have ended before the main stage of The International 2026. Team Resilience became the last Chinese representative to leave the tournament on August 16, losing 2-1 to Team Spirit in the decisive Elimination Stage.
The result completed a difficult tournament for the host region. China entered TI 2026 with three representatives: Xtreme Gaming received a direct invitation from Valve, while Vici Gaming and Team Resilience secured the two places available through the Chinese regional qualifier.
Xtreme Gaming, widely regarded as China’s strongest contender, were the first of the three to fall. The team finished the Swiss stage with a 1-4 series record and was eliminated after a 0-2 defeat to domestic rival Team Resilience. The result was particularly disappointing because Xtreme had reached the previous edition’s Grand Final and entered the Shanghai tournament with significant expectations around its experienced roster.
Vici Gaming survived slightly longer, completing the Swiss stage at 2-3 before facing Team Falcons in the Elimination Stage. Falcons won the series 2-0 on August 16, ending Vici’s tournament in 9th-13th place and reducing China’s representation to Team Resilience alone.
Vici’s elimination was followed almost immediately by another major development: the organisation announced the disbandment of its current Dota 2 roster. The decision came despite the team having finished fourth at the Dota 2 Esports World Cup earlier in the summer, making its early TI exit an abrupt end to a season that had recently shown signs of improvement.
Team Resilience then carried China’s final hopes into its best-of-three against Team Spirit. The Chinese squad managed to level the series after losing the opening map, but Spirit controlled the deciding game and secured a 2-1 victory. The result sent the two-time TI champions into the playoffs and confirmed that no Chinese roster would appear in front of the Shanghai audience during the main event.
The outcome is especially striking because this is only the second time The International has been staged in China. When Shanghai hosted TI9 in 2019, three Chinese teams reached the top eight and PSG.LGD finished third. Seven years later, the host region has failed to place a single team in the final eight.
The main event will take place from August 20 to 23 at the SPD Bank Oriental Sports Center. Valve said more than 10,000 spectators will be able to attend, with tickets already sold out. The eight remaining teams are TEAM VISION, Team Liquid, Nigma Galaxy, Team Falcons, BoomBoys, Team Spirit, Iron Wing and Team Yandex.
The opening playoff round will feature Iron Wing against Team Spirit, TEAM VISION against BoomBoys, Team Liquid against Team Yandex and Nigma Galaxy against Team Falcons. The tournament will continue in a double-elimination format before the Grand Final on August 23.
For Chinese Dota 2, the result turns what was expected to be a showcase on home soil into a significant competitive setback. The absence of local teams may also change the atmosphere surrounding the final four days in Shanghai, while Vici Gaming’s immediate roster disbandment adds further uncertainty about the region’s competitive direction. The International itself now moves into its decisive stage with eight international contenders and no home favourite remaining in the race for the Aegis.
