Brighton Thrash Arsenal 3-0 to End Nine-Match Premier League Winning Streak

Brighton handed defending champions Arsenal their first Premier League defeat of the season with a dominant 3-0 victory, ending the Gunners' nine-match winning run and inflicting their heaviest league loss since another 3-0 defeat to Brighton in 2023.

Arsenal's perfect start to their Premier League title defence came to an abrupt end on September 19 as Brighton & Hove Albion produced an impressive 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium.

Pascal Groß opened the scoring in the 31st minute before 19-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton's advantage shortly before half-time. Chema Andrés then scored his first Brighton goal on his first Premier League start in the 57th minute to put the match beyond Arsenal.

The result ended an impressive Arsenal sequence stretching back to the previous campaign. Mikel Arteta's side had won nine consecutive Premier League matches, their longest winning run in the competition since March 2004. Four of those victories had come at the start of the new season, leaving Arsenal with a perfect 12 points before travelling to Brighton.

Brighton's victory also produced a striking historical comparison. Arsenal had not lost a Premier League match by three goals since May 2023, when Brighton also beat them 3-0 — that time at the Emirates Stadium. Opta noted that Saturday's result was also Arsenal's biggest league defeat while entering a season as reigning English champions since a 3-0 loss to Everton in October 1989.

The manner of the defeat was particularly unusual given Arsenal's defensive start to the campaign. They had conceded only once in their opening four league matches, but Brighton repeatedly disrupted their build-up with aggressive pressing and quick attacks. The hosts won possession in Arsenal's final third nine times, the joint-most any opponent had managed against the Gunners in a Premier League match since December 2023.

Brighton, meanwhile, have emerged as the Premier League's most productive attacking team in the opening weeks. Their three goals against Arsenal took their total to 16 from five matches, the highest tally in the division and the most by any club through five Premier League games since Manchester City scored 19 in 2022/23.

The result completed a remarkable week for Fabian Hürzeler's side. Brighton had already beaten Coventry City 5-0 in the league before recovering from two goals down to defeat Manchester United in the EFL Cup. They followed those results by becoming the first team to take Premier League points from Arsenal this season.

Arteta acknowledged afterwards that Arsenal had performed well below their usual level, pointing in particular to technical mistakes that repeatedly allowed Brighton to apply pressure. The defeat left the champions on 12 points, and Manchester City's subsequent victory over Sunderland moved City three points clear at the top.

For Arsenal, the international break now provides time to respond before their next Premier League match against Leeds United on October 10. Brighton, meanwhile, enter the break with momentum and another major result against one of England's leading clubs.
