Brazil’s Digital Entertainment Market Reaches a Turning Point: Sports Betting Surpasses Online Casino Revenue
According to a new report by payment provider Pagsmile, Brazil’s digital entertainment market has entered a new phase — for the first time, sports betting has generated more revenue than online casinos during the first half of 2025.
The study shows that sports betting accounted for 59.5% of all transactions in the digital entertainment segment, generating R$434.7 million in just three months. Online casinos, in comparison, recorded R$295.8 million, or 40.5% of the market share.
Analysts attribute this shift to several key factors: the legal and regulatory consolidation of sports betting in Brazil, the surge in public engagement during major events such as Copa América and the 2025 Olympics, and the growing dominance of mobile-first betting platforms.
The Pagsmile report also points to major changes in Brazil’s payment ecosystem. PIX, the instant payment system that once dominated digital gaming transactions, fell from a 98% share to 63.29%. Meanwhile, Open Finance transfers climbed to 26.28%, signaling broader diversification in payment methods.
These findings confirm that Brazil’s gambling and digital entertainment sectors are maturing rapidly. Sports betting has become the country’s main growth driver, attracting higher player engagement and reshaping business strategies across the industry.
