Brazil to donate 0.1% of online betting revenue to support deaf sports, bill clears committee

Part of the revenue from online betting will be redirected to support deaf athletes. The proposal was recently approved by the House of Representatives' Disability Rights Committee

Thus:
●    0.1% of online sports bets will go to the CBDS (the organization responsible for the promotion and organization of sports events for deaf athletes in Brazil.
●    The bill still needs to be approved by three additional committees of the House of Representatives
●    If approved, the share of the Ministry of Sports will be reduced from 22.2% to 22.1%

The bill initially proposed to amend Law 14.790/2023, which regulates the fixed-odds betting system in Brazil. However, given that this law already amended the provisions of Law 13.756/2018, an earlier regulation concerning lotteries and gambling at the national level, Deputy Morais proposed an alternative approach. The new initiative directly interacts with previous laws and makes adjustments aimed at simplifying procedures and ensuring uniformity in the mechanisms for the distribution and redistribution of funds.

Since the entry into force of Law 14.790/2023, which established the rules for fixed-odds betting, the sector has shown rapid growth in both activity and revenue. It is estimated that the monthly turnover of the sector reaches approximately R$30 billion. Thus, 0.1% of online betting may at first seem like a small contribution, but in reality it can make a big difference to the deaf sports sector. This can now be considered an important step towards inclusion in Brazil.

“We are sincerely convinced that this allocation will significantly strengthen and expand the Confederation’s capacity to develop deaf sports,” said MP Flavia Morais
