Brazil joins the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions
The Brazilian government has officially announced its decision to join the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions, known as the Macolin Convention. This agreement was signed by 50 countries in order to combat the manipulation of sports competitions.
Minister of Sports Andre Fufuka stated: “The government wants Brazilians to feel protected and trust our sports betting control system. This decision demonstrates our vigilance and commitment to fulfilling our responsibilities.”
Fufuka also spoke about the government's ongoing fight against match-fixing and ensuring fairness in sports competitions.
Earlier, two years ago, the Brazilian Confederation created a unit to combat sweepstakes crime, which confirms the commitment of the authorities to ensure transparent and objective competitions. Interest in the betting sector has increased dramatically from both the local and international communities following the entry into force of Law 13.756/2018, which legalizes sports betting with fixed odds. Despite all the progress, challenges remain: the fight against illegal gambling and money laundering, as well as the complex process of bringing it into line with state legislation.
