The Gambling Authority  of Botswana has reached a significant achievement by issuing the first-ever licenses for Betting and Limited Payout Machines (LPM) in Botswana. This development aims to diversify the gambling sector and stimulate economic growth, with a strong emphasis on citizen participation.

At a media briefing on September 18, Board Chairperson Mr. Marvin T. Torto revealed that 16 companies have been awarded licenses, with an impressive 72% of the ownership being in the hands of citizens. He stated, “Over 80% of these licenses are majority citizen-owned, ensuring that the benefits of this growing industry flow directly to our people.”

The issuance of these licenses will pave the way for the establishment of over 200 new gambling sites nationwide, which is expected to create job opportunities and support local businesses. Mr. Torto highlighted that these licensed companies have pledged to generate 2,017 jobs, with a focus on empowering women, youth, and individuals living with disabilities.

The Gambling Authority is also dedicated to promoting responsible gambling practices and ensuring sustainable industry growth. Mr. Torto noted their commitment by mentioning the launch of a 24-hour toll-free responsible gambling helpline and the expansion of public education campaigns that have reached more than 100 villages.

This marks the beginning of a transformative era for Botswana’s gambling industry, promising economic and social benefits for communities across the nation.

The legal framework governing gambling in Botswana is primarily outlined by the Casino Act of 1971, the Lotteries and Betting Act, and the Gambling Act of 2012, which collectively regulate all gambling activities and establish the Gambling Authority as the overseeing body for the industry.
