Botswana issues ten bookmaker licences to boost gambling sector

The Gambling Authority (GA) of Botswana has reportedly issued ten bookmaker licences as part of efforts to expand and formalise the country’s gambling industry. Six of the licensed operators are said to have already launched, while one withdrew and three others are expected to commence operations soon. During the launch of BetXplosion, one of the new operators, officials indicated that the initiative reflects a national strategy to grow the sector while enforcing responsible gambling.

GA Board chairman Marvin Torto was reported to have stressed the importance of regulatory oversight and local economic development as key goals of the licensing rollout. He is also said to have noted that over 400 jobs have already been created, with projections estimating the potential for up to 2,300 more across casinos, betting shops, and Limited Payout Machines.

Torto reportedly highlighted risks such as underage gambling and money laundering, and emphasized that all operators must enforce strict access controls and real-time identity checks. BetXplosion has allegedly committed to dedicating five percent of its Gross Gambling Revenue to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, including youth, education, sports, and health.

In Botswana, legal gambling includes casinos, sports betting, and Limited Payout Machines, with the Gambling Authority responsible for regulation and enforcement.
