Botswana Hosts Tanzania Gaming Board for Knowledge Exchange on Digital Regulation
The Botswana Gambling Authority (BGA) hosted a delegation from the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) last week for a one-day working session focused on digital record-keeping systems, licensing standards, and regulatory cooperation across borders.
The meeting, held on October 9, 2025, in Gaborone, brought together senior officials from both regulators to discuss the use of technology in gambling oversight. The session placed special emphasis on Botswana’s Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) — a digital platform that centralises licence applications, monitoring, and compliance records.
During the visit, the Tanzanian delegation, led by Director General James Bakinege Mbalwe, toured BGA’s offices and reviewed how Botswana’s digital systems support enforcement, transparency, and paperless administration. The BGA presented the EDMS as a model for efficient workflow management, enabling faster data processing and secure sharing of regulatory documents.
BGA Acting CEO Moruntshi Kemorwale welcomed the guests and described the collaboration as a “valuable exchange of regulatory expertise that will strengthen both countries’ ability to manage a modern gambling industry.” Mbalwe praised Botswana’s progress in implementing digital solutions and expressed interest in adopting similar systems within Tanzania’s gaming authority.
As a follow-up, the two regulators agreed to establish a working group to share audit templates, compliance checklists, and training materials. Both sides also plan to organise online workshops on the practical application of EDMS tools in regulatory environments.
This partnership reflects a growing trend of regional cooperation among African gaming regulators, as countries across the continent explore digital tools to improve transparency, harmonise standards, and prepare for the expanding online gambling market.
