Botswana Gambling Authority trains Sunbet staff ahead of new betting shops
The Botswana Gambling Authority recently conducted a comprehensive Responsible Gambling and AML/CFT/CPF induction program for 22 newly hired Sunbet employees. The training equips the new recruits, who will work as managers, cashiers, and customer service representatives, with vital skills to operate safe and responsible gambling establishments. This initiative underscores the Authority's commitment to fostering a regulated and responsible gambling environment.
The Gambling Authority issued Botswana’s first-ever licenses for Betting and Limited Payout Machines (LPMs) in September 2024. At a media briefing on September 18, Board Chairperson Mr. Marvin T. Torto announced that 16 companies had been awarded licenses, with 72% of ownership held by citizens. He emphasized that over 80% of the licensed businesses are majority citizen-owned, ensuring that the economic benefits of the industry remain within the local community. The new licenses are expected to catalyze the establishment of over 200 gambling sites nationwide.
Botswana's gambling sector operates under a robust legal framework, guided by the Casino Act of 1971, the Lotteries and Betting Act, and the Gambling Act of 2012. These laws grant the Gambling Authority oversight of the industry, ensuring compliance, promoting responsible gaming, and supporting economic development.
