Botswana Gambling Authority Promotes Responsible Gambling at Walala Wasala Charity Cup
The Gambling Authority of Botswana used the Walala Wasala Charity Cup in Francistown to connect sport, community support and responsible gambling awareness.
The Gambling Authority of Botswana participated in the Walala Wasala Charity Cup, using the football event as a platform to promote responsible gambling and community engagement.
The one-day tournament took place on 1 August 2026 at Old Council Stadium in Francistown. It was organised as a charity football event to raise support for healthcare and community well-being.
The competition featured teams including TAFIC FC, Enesia FC, Tonota FC and Orapa United FC, with Orapa United crowned champions.
For the regulator, the event was not only about sport. Gambling Authority representatives engaged directly with attendees, sharing messages on safe gambling, informed decision-making and player protection.
The Authority’s participation reflects its broader Motshameko O Phepha approach, focused on clean play, responsible gambling and the positive social contribution of the licensed gambling sector.
The presence of Assistant Minister of Health Lawrence Ookeditse added a public-health dimension to the event, linking community sport with wider well-being priorities.
Botswana’s Gambling Authority has increasingly used public events, sports gatherings and community platforms to reach audiences outside formal gambling venues. This approach allows the regulator to discuss gambling risks in familiar, accessible settings.
The message is important for the industry. Licensed operators are expected to contribute to community development while supporting safeguards against excessive gambling and gambling-related harm.
The Walala Wasala Charity Cup therefore shows how sport can become a responsible gambling outreach channel. It connects entertainment, charity and education without separating gambling regulation from broader community welfare.
For Botswana’s gambling sector, the event reinforces a clear regulatory direction: growth in the industry must be accompanied by public awareness, safer gambling practices and visible social responsibility.
