Botswana Gambling Authority promotes regulated gambling as a driver of district-level economic growth

Senior officials from the Botswana Gambling Authority met with the Chobe District Full Council on November 26 to highlight how a regulated gambling sector could support job creation, tourism and local revenue as part of the country’s strategy to diversify beyond mining.

The Botswana Gambling Authority has intensified its nationwide outreach campaign aimed at positioning regulated gambling as a viable catalyst for local economic development. During a presentation to the Chobe District Full Council on November 26, senior Authority officials outlined how the gambling industry — when properly regulated — can stimulate employment, attract investment and generate stable revenue streams for district administrations.

According to the Authority, Botswana is seeking to broaden its economic base and reduce dependence on the mining sector, which remains the country’s dominant source of income. Regulated gambling, they noted, can complement existing tourism and hospitality activities in regions like Chobe, where international visitor numbers create strong demand for entertainment-sector services.

The briefing emphasized several potential benefits, including the creation of direct jobs in licensed gaming venues, indirect employment through supporting industries, and the ability of local councils to capture revenue via licensing and compliance mechanisms. Officials also highlighted the importance of strict regulation to prevent illegal gambling activities, protect consumers and ensure that the sector grows sustainably.

The Authority’s engagement with Chobe is part of a broader national programme involving district-level consultations, legislative alignment and ongoing public-education campaigns. Further stakeholder meetings are planned as Botswana refines its long-term strategy for economic diversification and responsible gaming development.
