Botswana Gambling Authority marks 10 years with community support campaign
Botswana’s Gambling Authority has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a community-focused initiative in Chobe District, linking the milestone to responsible gambling, public awareness and social support.
Botswana’s Gambling Authority has marked its 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of regulatory work under the slogan of fair and responsible play. In a public anniversary message dated May 7, the Authority said it was “truly elated” to have served Batswana and supported the responsible gambling movement for an entire decade.
As part of the anniversary activities, the regulator donated new school uniforms to students from underprivileged families in Chobe District. The uniforms were formally handed over to district leadership after a community initiative in which new uniforms were sewn for vulnerable learners in the area.
The anniversary has symbolic value for Botswana’s gambling sector. The Gambling Authority was established under the Gambling Act 2012, which created the legal framework for regulating gambling in the country. The Act fully came into operation for key regulatory provisions in April 2016, allowing the Authority to assume its supervisory role over the industry.
Over the past decade, the Authority has been responsible for licensing, monitoring compliance, protecting consumers and promoting responsible gambling. Its mandate covers the general supervision of gambling in Botswana and includes control over the development of gambling establishments, licence applications, compliance standards and the safeguarding of fair and safe gambling operations.
The 10-year milestone comes at a time when Botswana is trying to modernise its gambling framework and respond to the growth of betting, digital platforms and promotional competitions. In recent months, the Authority has also published lists of approved operators and authorised promotional competitions, reinforcing its message that gambling-related activities must operate within a licensed and transparent framework.
The donation to Chobe students shows that the regulator wants its anniversary to be linked not only to industry supervision, but also to public responsibility. For Botswana, this approach may help strengthen trust in the gambling framework by connecting regulation with education, community welfare and harm prevention.
Looking ahead, the Authority’s next decade is likely to be more complex than its first. As betting becomes more digital and cross-border risks increase, Botswana will need stronger enforcement, better consumer-protection tools and continued responsible gambling education. The anniversary therefore marks both an achievement and a reminder that regulation must keep evolving with the market.
