Betway officially launches in Botswana, strengthening drive for responsible gambling
International betting giant Betway has officially launched operations in Botswana, marking a key moment in the country's efforts to modernize and regulate its gambling industry. The launch, held last night, brought together key stakeholders, including Gambling Authority CEO Emolemo Peter Kesitilwe, who highlighted the Authority’s vision for a safer and more secure gambling environment.
“This launch marks a major step for Botswana’s gambling industry,” Kesitilwe stated during his keynote. “I would like to thank Betway for choosing to invest in our nation, and supporting the Gambling Authority’s mission to build a modern, secure, and responsible sector. Welcome, Betway, to Botswana’s regulated family!”
According to the Gambling Authority, licensed operators have already generated over P150 million in wagers—accounting for nearly 48% of the market. Kesitilwe emphasized that these figures reflect the effectiveness of data-driven regulation, cutting-edge compliance standards, and robust public awareness efforts.
A cornerstone of these efforts is the Motshameko o Phepha campaign, which has reached over 100,000 citizens across 191 villages, helping to shift public perception toward safe and informed betting. Additionally, through strategic enforcement and international cooperation, the Authority has successfully reclaimed 248,000 users who were previously gambling on illegal offshore platforms.
“As Betway Botswana joins the regulated fold, our expectations are clear: licences must deliver value, integrity, and protection,” Kesitilwe added. “Research, transparency, and responsible growth must lead the way as we build an ethical foundation for the future of gambling in Botswana.”
Representing Betway at the launch, Country Manager Mitchelle France-Mabiletsa reinforced the brand’s commitment to responsible gambling. “As the leading global online sports and gaming casino brand, Betway is proud to champion responsible betting in Botswana—where innovation meets integrity, and entertainment meets empowerment,” she said.
