Arsenal remain in Premier League and Champions League hunt despite domestic cup setbacks

Arsenal’s push for a historic multi-trophy season has taken two significant blows, but Mikel Arteta’s side still control the Premier League title race and remain alive in Europe as the decisive stretch of the campaign begins.

Arsenal’s domestic cup campaign has unraveled over the past two weeks. On March 22, the Gunners lost 2–0 to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, with Nico O’Reilly scoring twice in the second half as Pep Guardiola’s side lifted the trophy. Then, on April 4, Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage after a 2–1 defeat away to Southampton, with Mikel Arteta later admitting his team had missed a major opportunity.

Those defeats have ended Arsenal’s hopes of a domestic cup double and removed the possibility of a quadruple, but the wider season is still very much alive. Reuters reported after Arsenal’s 2–0 win over Everton on March 14 that the club remained top of the Premier League with 70 points from 31 matches, while Manchester City were on 61 points from 30 games. That leaves Arsenal in a strong position in the title race, even if City still have a game in hand.

Arsenal also remain in the Champions League and have already booked their place in the quarter-finals. Reuters reported on March 17 that Arteta’s side beat Bayer Leverkusen 2–0 in the second leg of their last-16 tie to progress and set up a quarter-final meeting with Sporting. That means the season is now narrowing toward two fronts that could still define Arsenal’s year: the Premier League title race and a deep run in Europe.

The timing makes the next few days especially important. Arsenal’s cup exits have exposed the cost of any drop in level, but they have not destroyed the season. If the North London club respond well, the current setbacks may yet be remembered as painful interruptions rather than the start of a collapse. The pressure has clearly increased, but so has the significance of every remaining league and European match. This final assessment is an inference based on Arsenal’s recent results, league position and Champions League status.
