Arsenal crush Manchester City 3-0 to win 2026 Community Shield

Arsenal opened the 2026/27 English football season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in Cardiff, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring inside the opening half-minute before Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard completed a dominant performance.

Arsenal claimed the first major English trophy of the 2026/27 season after defeating Manchester City 3-0 in the FA Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on August 16. The victory gave the reigning Premier League champions their 18th Community Shield title.

Riccardo Calafiori gave Arsenal an extraordinary start after just 24 seconds. Myles Lewis-Skelly released the Italian defender into the penalty area, where he finished past Gianluigi Donnarumma. The strike was the fastest Community Shield goal since 1968.

Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 28th minute. Martin Odegaard delivered towards the back post, Christos Tzolis headed the ball back across goal and Kai Havertz finished the move with a header from close range. Tzolis, one of Arsenal’s summer additions, made an immediate contribution on his competitive debut.

Manchester City had opportunities through players including Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku, but David Raya and Arsenal’s defence kept a clean sheet. The match was also Enzo Maresca’s first competitive fixture as City manager following his appointment as Pep Guardiola’s successor.

Any hopes of a City comeback disappeared shortly after half-time. In the 48th minute, Odegaard moved past Josko Gvardiol, wrong-footed Donnarumma and rolled the ball into the empty net for Arsenal’s third. The captain was later named player of the match.

The 3-0 scoreline was Arsenal’s biggest Community Shield victory since beating the same opponent by the same margin in 2014. Mikel Arteta praised his team’s intensity and desire after the match, while the performance also highlighted the depth of a squad preparing to defend its Premier League title.

For Manchester City, the defeat provides an early indication of the adjustments required under Maresca, with the club now turning its attention to its Premier League opener against Bournemouth. Arsenal, meanwhile, begin the new campaign with a trophy, three goals and a clean sheet against one of their main domestic rivals. The Community Shield cannot define an entire season, but the manner of the victory provides Arteta’s side with an emphatic opening statement ahead of their title defence.
