Peru has opened applications for permits for online sports betting and online casino operators. According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru (Mincetur), two types of licenses will be issued in the country.

The online sports betting license also includes betting on virtual sports, fantasy sports and e-sports. If the license holder becomes a company registered in Peru, it will also be able to organize the acceptance of bets at retail betting points. Foreign companies will only be able to accept online bets.

The second license covers online casinos, online slots and online games of skill.

Applications for licenses can be submitted until March 13.

There are currently 115 operators accepting bets from Peruvian players, of which only 29 are registered in the country. If companies do not apply for a license and continue to accept bets from local players, they face criminal prosecution and a fine of 150 tax units ( UIT), which corresponds to 200 thousand US dollars.

Let us recall that the law on regulation of online gambling, introducing a 12% tax on operator income, was signed on August 12, 2022 by Peruvian President Pedro Castillo. After public consultations, changes were prepared aimed at modernizing the legislation. In particular, the cost of licenses tripled to 600 Peruvian tax units (about US$810,000).

The authorities expect that the new regulatory rules will allow the budget to attract up to 162 million Peruvian soles ($42 million) annually.
