Algerian boxer Imane Khelif makes history with gold at Paris 2024 Olympics

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics by defeating China's Yang Liu to clinch the gold medal in the women's welterweight division.

This victory makes Khelif the first Algerian, Arab, and African woman to ever win an Olympic gold in boxing. The bout took place at the renowned Roland Garros Stadium, where Khelif delivered a dominant performance, securing a unanimous decision from the judges.

At 25, Khelif faced not only a formidable opponent but also the weight of controversy surrounding her gender identity, which had sparked widespread debate throughout the Games.

Before the Olympics, she and fellow boxer Lin Yu-Ting were embroiled in a controversy involving the International Boxing Association (IBA), which questioned their gender eligibility. The IBA's allegations were based on the results of gender tests, while the International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended Khelif's right to compete.

In the final match, Khelif showcased her skill and determination, seizing control early on. Despite Yang Liu’s strong start, Khelif swiftly countered with powerful punches, decisively winning the first round. She maintained her dominance throughout the bout, ultimately securing a well-deserved victory.

Khelif's gold medal marks Algeria's second victory at the Paris 2024 Olympics, following Kaylia Nemour's historic win as the nation's first gymnastics gold medalist.
