Algeria celebrates as Kaylia Nemour becomes first African gymnast to claim Olympic gold
Kaylia Nemour made history at the Paris Olympics by winning Algeria's first gold medal in gymnastics, triumphing in the uneven bars final on Sunday.
The 17-year-old gymnast delivered a captivating routine that earned her a score of 15.7, narrowly surpassing China's Qiu Qiyuan, who secured silver with a score of 15.5. American gymnast Sunisa Lee claimed bronze, marking her third medal in Paris and sixth overall in her Olympic career.
Nemour's performance was a display of athleticism and technical precision, featuring complex release-and-catch maneuvers that thrilled the audience at Bercy Arena.
This victory not only earned Nemour the gold but also made her the first African gymnast to win an Olympic medal. Overwhelmed with emotion, she celebrated by wrapping herself in the Algerian flag and expressed her disbelief, stating, "I'm so shocked; it's the dream of life."
