ActionSA and South Africa's NLC Commissioner discuss urgent reforms to support vulnerable communities

ActionSA, a centre-right political party in South Africa, has announced an upcoming meeting with National Lottery Commissioner Jodi Scholtz to address the ongoing funding crisis affecting non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Key topics include the stagnation of grant increases over the past 14 years, with the 2023 allocation of R1 billion falling short of the R2.5 billion needed when adjusted for inflation. The meeting will also focus on the rising expense-to-grant ratio, which has escalated from less than 5% in 2009 to 50% today, highlighting significant operational inefficiencies within the NLC.

ActionSA emphasizes the need for a stronger parliamentary voice for NGOs, advocating for necessary interventions to ensure these organizations receive the support they need rather than facing obstacles. The party is committed to championing the cause of NGOs, recognizing their vital role in safeguarding the interests of South Africa's most vulnerable populations.

Jodi Scholtz, as the new Commissioner of the NLC, has expressed a commitment to reforming the organization, acknowledging past wrongs and implementing measures for accountability. Her leadership is seen as crucial in restoring trust in the NLC and ensuring that funds are allocated effectively to support communities in need.

The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) provides funding to a variety of non-profit entities, including NGOs, to support public good initiatives. Since its inception, the National Lottery has raised over R25 billion for good causes and funded more than 110,000 projects.

August 5, 2024 NLC has provided an update on the progress of adjudications from the 2023/24 Call for Funding. In total, the NLC received 5,304 applications, of which 1,187 have been approved for funding.
