Burkinabè National Lottery supports education and research with 1.25 billion FCFA

The Burkinabè National Lottery (LONAB) has pledged 1.25 billion FCFA (approximately $2.2 million USD) to support education and research in Burkina Faso over the next five years. This announcement comes as a welcome relief to the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (FONER), which has been facing financial difficulties in recent years.

The agreement was signed on Monday, June 10th, 2024, in Ouagadougou by Dr. Aboubakar Nacanabo, Minister of Economy, Finance and Foresight, and Professor Adjima Thiombiano, head of FONER. The funds will be distributed annually in installments of 250 million FCFA.

This grant renews a previous agreement between LONAB and FONER that expired in November 2018. The funds will be used to provide financial support to students enrolled in public universities in Burkina Faso, cover research costs for graduate students, and support student extracurricular activities.

Dr. Nacanabo commended LONAB for its continued commitment to education, especially during challenging economic times. He urged students to make the most of this financial assistance.

The Burkinabe National Lottery is the sole authorized lottery and sports betting operator in Burkina Faso. The company operates through sales points and collaborating agents.
